Titter with Tammy Taylor
I’m the founder of American Nail Systems and I’ve
been in the nail industry for nearly 10 years now. Gosh
it seems like only a couple of years. Isn’t it funny
when your young time seems to almost stand still and when
your older a decade seems to zip past like a couple of
years.
When you’re passionate about something it never
feels like work that’s how I feel about the nail
industry. I still get excited completing a new set of
nails and even more excited when I get my nails done by
one of the ladies that I’ve trained. It is one of
the most rewarding experiences in life to teach someone
a skill that they then go on to master. The thrill of
the ladies starting out in their business is like the
thrill of watching a child ride a bike for the first time.
Emotions surface, excitement and fear at the same time
and of course finally for many the pleasure of success!!!
It comes easier for some than others but what determines
their
outcome I have realised is not skill – but sheer
determination and attitude.
American Nail Systems was created to support and encourage
these amazing women to even greater levels of learning
and financial success than they ever realised was possible.
“A
couple of the most common question I’m asked by
people every day who are interested in our training school
are: “Don’t you get bored doing the same thing
everyday, and is it hard to learn?”
I liken it to driving a car, when you first start everything
seems hard, the gears the clutch and watching where you’re
going, all at the same time. “Phew, you must remember
that”. Then you become better and more confident
until you don’t even think about driving the car,
in fact you have now added a noisy stereo and are enjoying
the journey.
Nails are just the same, repeating the same familiar steps
over and over, until adding additional steps when you’re
confident. To me this industry is about caring, enjoying
developing relationships, making people happy and making
a difference.
“Welcome to a very rewarding career”
The other question I get asked is; how did I get into
nails? It is a bit of a funny story:
I clearly remember my first set of nails extensions. I
was a naïve young sixteen year old country girl.
I was working for a commercial flower grower in the country
at the time. Today it was my turn to work in dispatch
– fantastic, meaning inside work, dealing with customers
and having someone to talk to. The smell alerted me to
the fact that someone else was in the shop. Her perfume
was stronger than 30 buckets of freshly picked roses –
Opium. She was like a movie star, beautiful blonde hair
with red plastic earrings, matching bracelets, lipstick,
high heels and 2 inch long red nails (we are talking the
eighties here). I couldn’t stop staring and admiring
her, especially her nails. I packed up her order, trying
not to show my badly bitten nails. I felt ugly and ashamed.
I commented on her nails, maybe she felt sorry for me,
or maybe it was destiny. She told me they were false and
where I could get my own. As soon as she left I got the
phone book out, calling and asking to speak to the “False
Nail Lady”. I told her that I was a nail biter,
she told me to stop biting and the appointment was made
for 2 weeks time. The price was $65. There was a lot of
overtime done in the two weeks leading up to my big transformation.
It was like the night before Christmas, I tossed and turned
in my bed, I just couldn’t sleep and I was so excited.
Just think, tomorrow I would be transformed from the boyish
country girl with bitten nails, to that of movie star
status. The reception room was a blur, the lady sat me
on a high bar stool and began to do her magic. I wanted
them long and red, just like I had seen. It was the most
fascinating process. It took 1 and a half hours, and they
were thick, very heavy – but oh so beautiful. I
paid over my savings and rebooked to have them maintained
after 2 weeks. I couldn’t open my wallet. It took
me ages to unlock the car; by the time I had my seatbelt
on my nails had really been knocked around and were feeling
painful. Regardless of that I just couldn’t stop
staring at my hands. I wound down the car window, adjusted
my wing mirror then proceeded to tap the car door while
looking at my nails, all the way home. This was the first
of many sets of nails and experiences on my journey to
becoming a woman.
I still get excited for my clients when they get their
very first set, and I always do my best to make it special
for them. I always advise them to wait until they get
home until they look in the mirror, to avoid accidents.
I am proud to say that I am a Nail Technician, in the
business of personal transformation, helping women look
and feel confident, so they too can enjoy their personal
journey.

On discovering how easy it was to work with this product
in comparison to other products I had tried. I was determined
to educate and support others using and learning the Tammy
Taylor system. Since making that decision I have trained
many technicians, existing and new. I am passionate about
teaching and love supporting our nail technicians and
watching them develop their skills.
I am proud that we not only focus on the practical side
of the salon but also the business side of this industry.
I love teaching my students and find their success very
rewarding and am determined that they are confident in
the nail industry. This journey has led me to the position
of Senior Educator. As senior educator for American Nail
Systems I am responsible for writing manuals, training
programmes and supporting our educator’s nation
wide.
If I remember back to when I started as a newly qualified
and abandoned nail technician, doing nails in under an
hour was purely fantasy, let alone nails that didn’t
lift. I became the Queen of filing… fast!!
Since discovering the Tammy Taylor products and receiving
the support and education from American Nail Systems,
nails in under an hour is a reality, my nails now don’t
lift and I became the retail queen with cuticle oil being
my speciality in the salon where I used to work.
The use of the Tammy Taylor product and system speaks
for itself. For the first time ever in my career, I had
a full appointment book, this has allowed me to become
a master in my field.
